Desktop as a Service (DaaS)

Desktop as a Service (DaaS) – sometimes referred to as Hosted/Managed Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) – is a cloud solution that replaces traditional desktop management.

Real Life Application of DaaS

A customer was running desktops on Windows XP, which would no longer be supported by Microsoft in 2015, posing serious security concerns. An upgrade would require more powerful desktops, meaning a large CapEx investment. Instead, the customer implemented a DaaS solution which allowed them to migrate to Windows 7 with one centralized upgrade, and leverage all their existing hardware. Moreover, the company’s data was now secure, since employee devices no longer contained critical information—desktops were stored in the cloud and accessed with a log-in and password. Many employees also enjoyed the benefits of using other devices such as Macs and tablets which they felt increased their productivity.

What is DaaS (Desktop as a Service)?

Desktop as a Service (DaaS) – sometimes referred to as Hosted/Managed Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) – is a cloud solution that replaces traditional desktop management. Virtual desktops are stored in the provider’s data center and accessed through a secure web portal. Instead of being tied to a physical, company-issued device with all of their applications and data, employees can access their desktops using any web-enabled devices of their choosing— PCs or Macs, tablets, smart phones, and more. This approach allows for simplified, unified desktop management and increased productivity and security, all without the immense CapEx and maintenance costs required for an on-premises VDI solution.

Why Consider DaaS?

When a company decides to integrate their organization’s desktops into the cloud they must choose whether they want to build it (VDI) or look for a service that has developed a platform (DaaS), which could eliminate a lot of additional CAPAX costs, internal complexities, and end user performance issues.

3 things to consider when looking at Daas (Desktop as a Service)

1. Do you have an IT organization that can make decisions for the business’s IT Strategy? If not, this will not be a good fit for DaaS

2. Why has the business opted for DaaS? If it is to do a comparison with a desktop refresh and no other achievements, this might not be a good fit. For example, mobility and security are common reasons that DaaS would be a good fit.

3. Can their IT Organization support this new technology, or will they need help? This includes:desktop support, managing the DaaS platforms and image creation
